My Political Values
Westin believes that the rights of the individual should be protected and believes that less government is better than more government. He also believes that in our democracy there should be room for discussion and welcomes opposing views and is also committed to working to find mutual understanding and common ground. He contends that “not everyone thinks the same but everyone must be respected. Politics, like in any good marriage, must find compromise that comes from both parties.”
Goals as Your Senator
“Through my business, I’ve been fortunate enough to see all 48 contiguous states, yet nothing compares to our state, especially the communities of Westerly, Charlestown, and South Kingstown. Even so, I’ve seen so many of our young people leave our state. My goal as a State Senator for District 38 is to improve the business and economic climate so that our children can also settle down here in the Ocean State.”
- Support eliminating taxation of retirement income so our parents and grandparents can retire in Rhode Island and watch future generations grow up.
- Work to reverse the laws and regulations enacted by our State Government that have made it cost-prohibitive for our children to go to college and settle close to their childhood home.
- Write legislation to increase parental influence and control over their children’s education and advocate for school choice. A good education doesn't just provide a path towards a good career, it's also a civil right.
- Decrease the cost of doing business for our small and micro businesses, paid for by eliminating corporate welfare to wealthy corporations.
- More durable local businesses means more durable local jobs. Jobs that are the backbone of strong communities
- Reform our access to public records laws ensuring they are a floor, not a ceiling. The letter of the law cannot be used to violate the spirit of the law and deny citizens oversight of bureaucratic action at any level of government.
- I'll support RI's veterans. I will work to fully fund RI's veteran's home and make sure that their sacrifices are remembered and honored. Every veteran should be first in line for assistance from our government.
- As a conservationist, allowing for more conservation of land and increasing recreational access, so all of our children can enjoy the same opportunities their parents and grandparents had.
- To fight for shoreline access for citizens of Rhode Island which is their right as enshrined in article 1 section 17 of the Rhode Island Constitution A.D. 1842 "The people shall continue to enjoy and freely exercise all the rights of fishery, and the privileges of the shore, to which they have been heretofore entitled under the charter and usages of this state,"
